Descriptions of YWEA 2008 Workshops

Workshops for Girls (8:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m., meals included):

West African Drumming
In this playful and powerful workshop lead by musicians, participants will learn about creative sound and movement and the rich cultural heritage of Africa.

Healthy Body Image & Self-Esteem
I'm too fat. I'm too skinny. I’m just right. If only I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles... How we think about our physical appearance effects how we feel about ourselves. How can we think and feel good and make healthy decisions about our bodies?

Physics Fun
Ever wonder how water becomes ice? Or how big the universe is? Have you ever heard of a quark? Why does heating water cause it to boil? Who was Marie Curie? This workshop can help you answer some of these questions and many more!

Workshop for Parent/Guardian/Caregiver (9:00 - 10:00 a.m.):

We invite parents, guardians and caregivers to join us for an engaging one hour workshop. Activities will focus on the different messages young women receive (e.g., who they need to be and how they need to act) and how parents can encourage and support young women to be themselves, set and achieve goals, and have high self-esteem. All workshop attendees receive an engraved silver-star key holder and a youth resource guide! Refreshments will be served.
